Some weather forecasts think Brits could be in for a bit more snow this month even as the UK enjoys some warmer weather – there could be light flurries across the UK, forecasts say

New forecasts are predicting snow will hit Britain after a period of mild early spring weather.

As the UK edges out of winter and into Spring, temperatures have risen over the last week with sunny spells seen across the country. But some predictions suggest that is about to change with forecasters at WX Charts predicting some flurries of snow next week.

There could be light snow across the country on March 12. The forecast for 12pm that day suggest light snow – less than 1cm – in areas in the southwest near Cheltenham and the Cotswolds and up to Birmingham in the Midlands. A line of light snow is forecast up from Birmingham, missing Manchester and all the way up to Edinburgh in Scotland.

The heaviest areas of around 2cm look to be across the North Pennines. Much of Wales is covered except for Pembrokeshire, while most of eastern Scotland is exempt from the snow affecting the eastern half of the country.

WX Charts predicted there could be further snow in the morning of March 14, at around 6am. Flurries rather than significant snowfall can be expected according to this forecast, with a few centimetres in the southwest north of Exeter, in south Wales north of Cardiff, and parts of Conwy and Denbighshire. In England, parts of the Peak District and the North Pennines could see snow, as well as areas south of Edinburgh. The heaviest snow is expected in some areas of the Scottish Highlands, according to the forecast.

The Met Office for around the same period from March 13 to March 22 suggests a “cool easterly theme, with high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south”. Weather experts said: “This will continue to bring a few showers to some eastern areas, but there’ll be a good deal of dry weather on the whole, though spells of rain may get close to the far south from time to time.”

They added: “The following week (17th) is likely to see a transition to more unsettled conditions with spells of stronger winds and some rain in many areas, but perhaps more especially the north and west. The south and east could see the best of the drier interludes between times. Temperatures are likely to be below average at first with frost by night, then above average later.”

This week will see temperatures turn colder on Monday, followed by rain that “spreads southwards through Monday marking a change to colder, cloudier conditions for the new week”. This may be followed by “occasional sunny spells on Tuesday and Wednesday, mixed with a few wintry showers”.

Met Office weather outlook

Sunday:

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Rain spreads southwards through Monday marking a change to colder, cloudier conditions for the new week. Occasional sunny spells on Tuesday and Wednesday, mixed with a few wintry showers.
