Top tips for coping with hayfever

A striking weather map shows pollen levels will be high in certain region across the UK this week amid the current spell of warmer weather.

The Met Office has warned hay fever sufferers to take extra measures to control their symptoms in the coming days. Nettle pollen, in particular, is airborne this time of year but grass pollen remains an issue in some areas, including Northwest England. This is due to rising temperatures, and more pollen is released during warmer weather. Temperatures reached 30C in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk on Wednesday afternoon, the Met Office said. It is expected to remain warm and sunny for the rest of the week, and most of the weekend.

But with this forecast, the Met Office has written on its website: “Nettles pollen airborne in warm weather. A little grass pollen only. Spores: Many types currently airborne, especially Alternaria when dry and warm. Although it is very difficult to avoid exposure to pollen there are a number of measures you can take that will help you to minimise exposure and ease the severity of your hay fever symptoms.”

The glorious sunny spell will crash to an end – with thunderstorms for many – but return again, the Met Office says. Thursday September 5 is the “most likely” date on which the delightful sunshine will return, the forecasters understand. They’ve assessed data which pinpoints the movement of the next band of high pressure and, following a jet stream from the Azores this Friday, the next plume of hot air will arrive on Thursday September 5.

It means it will be dry and pleasant with temperatures likely to increase to around 23C in Somerset and Hampshire, 22C in Worcestershire and even 21C as far north as Dundee, eastern Scotland, according to meteorologists at Ventusky. While these figures won’t reach the 26.7C recorded on Tuesday in Cambridge, they are warmer than average for the time of year. It is expected to remain warm, particularly across the south, on Friday September 6, as the month begins with high pressure.
