A popular UK motorway, often touted as the country’s best, has been ranked one of the top hubs in the world for electric vehicles (EVs) – with around 40 charging units altogether

A much-loved UK pit stop has been voted one of the very best in the world for drivers of electric vehicles (EVs).

Gloucester Services not only came out on top of the latest Which? survey of nearly 90 UK service stations to once again be crowned the UK’s best motorway services for 2025 (it also won in 2021), it has now been voted the best EV hub in Europe, and second-best in the world. Situated between junctions 11A and 12 on the M5, Gloucester Services is operated by the Westmorland Family, and takes a completely different approach to motorway hospitality compared to most.

Unlike the standard service station model dominated by global fast-food chains and rundown toilets, Gloucester offers something different. Here, you’ll find a farm shop filled with locally sourced produce, a canteen-style restaurant serving freshly cooked meals and a green oasis with a duck pond on the back — far removed from your standard motorway experience. You’ll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to plugging in your EV.

CEO of Westmorland Nabil Subuh commented: “In our industry, Westmorland is a small family-owned independent business, delighted to be recognised for doing business differently. Electric vehicles are the future for our business and we’re investing in that future, creating unique places to stop, and recharge with proper food that reflects the flavour of the locality.”

This recognition is part of the annual Best EV Hub in the World awards carried out by Global Convenience Store Focus, which takes into account the experiences of users and community votes. Gloucester Services narrowly missed out on the top global spot, which went to Shell Recharge’s large charging station at Shenzhen International Airport, China.

Since opening in 2014, Gloucester Services has expanded its charging capacity to 24 EV points and 16 Tesla Supercharger units, with plans to add more supported by solar panel installations to enhance sustainability. The main building features a 4,000 square metre green roof that supports local wildlife, as well as ponds and new tree plantings that contribute to the local ecosystem. Their commitment to community reinvestment is reflected in their partnership with Gloucestershire Gateway Trust.
