When rare coins come to mind, the Kew Gardens 50p is typically what people think of first. It’s exceptionally difficult to find, with just 210,000 pieces in circulation since its 2009 release. If you’re lucky enough to find one, however, you could be sitting on a small fortune as they’re often sold to collectors for vastly more than their face value.

But if you’ve given up trying to find this coveted coin, there’s a fresh 50p coin that’s even “rarer” than the Kew Gardens edition. According to TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, it is currently the most “sought-after” piece by coin enthusiasts – alongside a £1 coin was dubbed the ‘rarest of 2025’.

Speaking to his 205,000 followers, he recently highlighted the Atlantic Salmon 50p which has now become the ‘rarest’ in active circulation.

He said: “With only 200,000 of these, this is an exciting day for coin collecting. It takes the crown from the all-mighty Kew Gardens 50p coin which held the title for the past 15 years.

“Launched at the tail end of 2023, the Atlantic Salmon 50p was released as part of the national celebrations for King Charles III’s Coronation year.

“This coin has now officially dethroned the Kew Gardens 50p, which had a mintage of 210,000 when it first came out in 2009.”

The collector also highlighted how the Atlantic Salmon 50p is presently leading the pack amongst 50p coins regarding popularity.

He added: “The coin has already started to gain [traction] on eBay and other coin groups. And the price is skyrocketing, so keep an eye out for the new rarest 50p you can find in your change.”

The specialist’s video immediately led to people checking their change pots. One enthusiastic collector commented: “My daughter has two of these,” which prompted the guidance: “Excellent, keep them safe.”

Another couldn’t hide their excitement, declaring: “Really excited, can’t control myself here.”

A third chimed in: “So exciting, great video.”

If you happen to own the coveted Atlantic Salmon 50p coin, it would be sensible to seek professional valuation.

Meanwhile, eBay listings reveal that this scarce discovery could fetch more than £50.
