After a few wears and washes white clothes sometimes lose their sparkle and go a dull grey colour, but one mum has shared how to keep whites looking fresh for longer

Ensuring our white clothes stay their bright original colour for as long as possible can be very tricky. After a few wears and washes, white t-shirts, shirts, blouses and dresses often turn a dull grey colour.

One mum has shared a simple yet “unbelievable” hack on TikTok which she uses to maintain the brightness of her whites. Kaye Marie’s video has been viewed more than 225,000 times and shows how she keeps her son’s school shirts looking fresh. The cleaning guru, who has more than 436,000 followers on TikTok, regularly posts about her family life and offers tips on maintaining a clean and orderly home. She discovered a reliable method to remove stains and restore her children’s white school garments to their original state, with the tip applicable to any white clothing item you want to wash, Leicestershire Live reports.

In her video, Kaye begins by saying: “If you’re struggling to keep your children’s school shirts white, this video is for you.” For dirty collars and stains, the mum explains she puts washing up liquid directly onto the desired area. She then rubs is it before washing. But the real game-changer Kaye recommends is Spanish whitening tablets, which she says work wonders. “Spanish whitening tablets are unbelievable,” the mum says. “You don’t need two, I’m just an over user.”

So, simply add at least one whitening tablet to your washing machine drum, along with some detergent and wash the clothes at 40C or 60C. The brand Kaye uses can be purchased from The Little Spanish Cleaning Company for £3. Alternatively, Kaye also suggests using Milton sterilising tablets from Boots, where a pack of 40 retails at £3.35. After washing, Kaye says the shirts come out with “no stains or marks” and look “absolutely perfect”.

The video has been liked more than 12,000 times and many of Kaye’s followers took to the comments to thank her for the tip. A few others also shared their own wisdom on combatting stubborn school uniform stains. One grateful follower penned: “Oh this will be a lifesaver, thank you!” Another confirmed: “I’ve followed you since you last posted this and can confirm it works.” A third suggested: “Another good tip is to dry them in direct sunlight.” Another said: “I use mould spray on the collar then in the wash and job done.”
