Despite its proximity to towering tourist buildings and a bustling resort town, this beach has a reputation for being surprisingly serene for sunbathers and snorkelling enthusiasts

The beaches of Ibiza are plentiful but often overly-populated, but there is one that has managed to slip below the radar. Despite being located near one of the island’s big resort towns, this beach has managed to maintain an idyllic atmosphere after long being overshadowed by its larger neighbour resort.

S’Arenal Petit, the little sister of the infamous S’Arenal Gran beach has made a name for itself as an escape from the hectic party atmosphere that pervades Ibiza. Situated next to the village of Portinatx and one of the three beaches that make up the coast, S’Arenal Petit is in a small inlet with enough modern amenities to put your mind at ease.

Measuring 50 metres long and 34 metres wide, the secluded cove features a small stretch of white sand with a gentle 25 metre slope from the coast. The turquoise water is shallow and crystal clear, and the beach is manned by a lifeguard so it is safe for families. Just as well, S’Arenal Petit’s small size and tranquil atmosphere makes it a favourite among couples and childfree adults.

The beach is connected to the larger S’Arenal Gran by a long sea promenade that is peppered with souvenir shops and bars so packing a cooler is not essential. Sunbeds and umbrellas are also available for rent on the beach, and there are access points for individuals with reduced mobility. Fresh water shower stations are also on-site to wash off the saltwater, a staple comfort of any Ibizan beach.

A small patch of pine trees can be found at the rear of the cove, a reminder of the woods that were cleared for the resort buildings that now take up the space. Despite its close proximity to the touristy towers of Ibiza, S’Arenal Petit still embodies a more relaxed side of the island. The surrounding rock plateaus create a small sense of isolation and the wind is reportedly gentle and blows toward the sea.

The beach has also become a popular destination for sea exploration and water sports, including paddleboarding and kayaking. The clear water is ideal for snorkelers or anyone with goggles to view the area’s distinct marine life and underwater rock formations. The surrounding coves are also aptly suited for most water-based activities, and the external area of Cala Portinatx is great for sailing or simply enjoying the sunset.

Despite its reputation for seclusion, the surrounding tourist buildings mean that S’Arenal Petit can still get busy on weekends. Take care to arrive early or during off-peak hours if you are keen to enjoy the beach in peace.

Once you’re done with your day in the sun, there are a number of cocktail bars and restaurants to discover before immersing yourself in hectic bustle of Ibiza’s nightlife.
