Travelling on a shoestring budget can often feel like an overwhelming challenge, despite the abundance of budget airlines and cut-price accommodation options.

However, one British TikToker, renowned for her money-saving travel hacks, has discovered what she describes as Europe’s “most underrated” gem – Bosnia and Herzegovina – where you can experience a long weekend break for under £160, covering absolutely everything.

In a TikTok clip, Em from @emsbudgettravel shared her number one recommendation after exploring nine nations in 2024 alone. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a breathtaking Balkan country that has recently become far more reachable thanks to fresh, wallet-friendly routes operated by Ryanair. In other news, a Brit abroad slammed an all-inclusive hotel food asking ‘what on earth is this?’

“This is one of the most underrated countries in Europe and one of the cheapest I’ve been to,” Em revealed in her footage. “I only spent £158.44 in total for everything, including flights, accommodation, food, activities, transport-literally everything.”

Em’s adventure focused on the capital, Sarajevo, which she praised as a gorgeous and secure location populated by welcoming residents. According to Xinhua, Bosnia and Herzegovina welcome nearly two million tourists in 2024, an increase of 10.3 per cent compared to the previous year.

Sarajevo boasts a wealth of heritage, culture, and stunning vistas, providing tourists with an extraordinary fusion of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and contemporary characteristics, reports the Express.

For travellers keen to venture further afield from the capital, Em suggests a day excursion to Mostar, a charming town merely two hours distant by rail. Mostar is renowned for its historic Stari Most bridge, a spot where daring individuals leap into the Neretva River below – a thrilling tradition that infuses the city with an enchanting allure.

Em shared her enchantment: “The city felt so magical and it was the highlight of the trip for me.” She added: “Overall, it was an amazing trip, and I definitely wanted more than the four days I had here.”

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a gem for budget travellers, offering four-star accommodation in Sarajevo for as little as £45 per night. Sharing the cost with a friend brings the price down to just over £20 each per night, presenting an attractive option for those looking to explore without breaking the bank.

If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of city life, that also has history and good food, Bosnia and Herzegovina is the place. The best thing about it is that you won’t need to request any time off from work.
