Montenegro, which is surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, has been compared to Greece for its stunning beaches and picturesque towns — and it’s cheaper

Greece, with its idyllic islands, iconic white architecture and azure waters, is a top pick for holidaymakers from around the globe, all eager to soak up the Mamma Mia fantasy.

But a Grecian getaway doesn’t come cheap, and the most beloved spots can be swamped with tourists. For those yearning for the same breathtaking vistas without the hefty price tag or the throngs of visitors, Montenegro is a stellar alternative.

Nestled on the Adriatic Sea across from Italy, Montenegro is tucked away just beyond Albania, a stone’s throw from Greece, yet it remains a hidden gem among travellers. Its stunning coastline and untouched hamlets have earned it comparisons to Greece, promising an equally enchanting vacation experience.

The allure of Montenegro has been capturing attention on TikTok, where travellers share their discoveries. A user by the handle @bellastraveldiary uploaded a mesmerising video showcasing the shimmering blue sea, garnering over 200,000 views and 10,000 likes. The caption declared: “This isn’t Greece or Italy…it’s Montenegro. It’s one of my favourite places I’ve visited on this trip!”

TikTok traveller @emsbudgettravel has tipped Montenegro as the hidden gem of 2023, reports the Manchester Evening News, with her video racking up almost 600,000 views and 21,000 likes. In her post, she exclaimed: “I travelled to 12 different countries in 2023 and this was my favourite.”

Em detailed her time in Budva and Mogren beach alongside clips boasting the mesmerizing blue sea. She stated: “I can’t believe more people aren’t doing this and it was absolutely stunning and pretty much empty every time we went round. I feel like if this was in Greece or Italy it would be absolutely packed.”

The destination is also pitched as the perfect budget-friendly option for travellers eyeing an autumnal escape. Skyscanner list direct flights from Manchester Airport to Tivat for October with prices starting at just £53 though this might exclude seating selection and luggage charges.

Furthermore, once you’ve landed, your wallet won’t take a hit either. While dining out on a three-course meal for two will cost you approximately 36 Euros in stark contrast to Crete’s 46 Euros. Even a pint of beer is a steal at about 2.20 Euros, well below the price in Crete.

Expect enjoyable weather too with temperatures hovering in the comfortable low 20s during the season, significantly warmer than the brisk autumn the UK is known for. Do remember to pack a light jacket for the evenings which may get a tad cool.

Budva, one of the most ancient settlements on the Adriatic Coast, is your go-to destination for a beach holiday. It’s even dubbed as the Budva Riviera due to its breathtaking beaches – though you might want to pack water shoes as they can be pebbly.

Tivat is another picturesque town nestled within a bay. However, with the surrounding mountains, this spot resembles the Italian lakes more than a Greek island.
