Normally, when you think of a Greek island paradise, you think of hordes of tourists, but one location is unmissable.

If you’re dreaming of a stunning Greek getaway without the crowds, then there’s one spot that should be on your radar. The lesser-known island of Koufonisia in the Cyclades offers an unparalleled holiday experience.

Part of the Small Cyclades, Koufonisia is so compact that it can easily be explored on foot. While Pano Koufonisia has seen a slight increase in tourism over recent years, Kato Koufonisia remains uninhabited – save for a solitary restaurant.

To uncover this untouched paradise, simply hop on the daily boat from Pano Koufonisia’s port and within 10 minutes, you’ll be discovering the secluded beaches of Kato Koufonisia.

The majority of the island’s beaches are only accessible by foot as there are no roads. The hiking trails aren’t too challenging and offer breath-taking views of the Aegean Sea.

If you fancy spending the night, you’ll have to sleep under the stars with the island’s native goats for company, reports the Express. Despite the lack of overnight accommodation on Kato, both islands are renowned for having some of Greece’s best beaches, untouched and unspoilt by mass tourism.

As for getting around Kato, the island is car-free so if you’re planning a day of beach hopping, it’s best done on foot. The island is so small that you can stroll around it in just a few hours. Four of the top beaches on this tint paradise are Nero, Detis, Lakki and Pezoulia – all equally breath-taking with their turquoise waters and stunning ocean views.

Back on Pano Koufonisi, you’ll discover Chora – the only village in Koufonisia. Here, you’ll find all the essentials for your holiday: a pharmacy, supermarket, medical centre and an ATM.

There’s also a handful of accommodation options as well as eateries, pubs and cafes where you can sit back and soak up the laid-back island lifestyle.
