BBC Radio 2 host Vernon Kay posted about his outfit for an event this week and teased that he had ended up using Star Wars merchandise after ‘forgetting’ one aspect of it

Vernon Kay forced to use cufflinks as shirt studs in fashion emergency

Vernon Kay appeared a bit embarrassed over an issue with his outfit for an event this week, with him having shared that he had to use Star Wars merchandise as a result.

The presenter, 50, took to Instagram on Friday evening to share with his followers that he was preparing for an event. He didn’t provide any details about the special occasion but did showcase some of his outfit in a video on the platform.

He was seen modelling a navy suit jacket, white shirt and a dark bow tie in the footage. The BBC Radio 2 host however revealed that he had “forgotten” some accessories for the shirt itself and had instead ended up using alternatives.

During the recent video, Vernon shared that he didn’t have any shirt studs, which are described as decorative fasteners that fit onto buttonholes, with him. He stated that he had used cufflinks in their place, with one of them depicting a stormtrooper helmet from the Star Wars franchise.

Vernon told his followers: “All dressed up and ready to go. And then you realise that you’ve forgotten your shirt studs and you use a cufflink which is a stormtrooper’s helmet, and a cufflink, and another cufflink.” And seemingly referencing Homer Simpson’s catchphrase from the animated sitcom the Simpsons, he appeared to conclude by saying: “D’oh!”

The radio host – who previously fronted TV shows like All Star Family Fortunes – used a gif depicting a ‘facepalm’ gesture over the video. It showed singer-songwriter Tinashe putting the palm of her hand up against her forehead.

Vernon, who is believed to be a fan of the Star Wars film series, shared the video on his Instagram Story just a day before Star Wars Day on Saturday. The annual occasion is celebrated on May 4 by fans of the beloved franchise, which launched with George Lucas’ film Star Wars (1977), which is now often known as Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

The post comes after Vernon celebrated his birthday just last week. The occasion prompted festivities on BBC Radio 2, including celebrities having been enlisted to perform a revised version of Stevie Wonder’s song Happy Birthday. The group included BBC Radio colleagues like Scott Mills, Jeremy Vine, Sara Cox, Trevor Nelson and Michelle Visage.

Additionally, Vernon’s wife Tess Daly, 55, was among those who marked the occasion on social media at the time. She took to Instagram to celebrate his birthday and shared a series of throwback photos with fans on the platform. Alongside them, Strictly Come Dancing host Tess wrote in a message to her husband last week: “50 today [Vernon]. So happy to have spent half of those birthdays with you.”
