Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was asked for an update on his contract situation in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s dramatic draw with Arsenal at The Emirates

Virgil van Dijk has hinted that he will put off contract talks over his Liverpool future until nearer the end of the season.

The Reds captain, 33, is out of contract in the summer and, as such, will be free to speak with interested clubs from overseas in January along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Van Dijk has repeatedly been quizzed on his future plans. But the Dutchman has remained coy as Liverpool and their players continue to adapt to life under new head coach Arne Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

The defender was asked for an update on contract talks again after scoring in Sunday’s enthralling 2-2 draw with Arsenal and implied that there would be little in the way of updates in the coming months. He told Sky Sports: “I’m very calm. Let’s see what happens towards the end of the season.

“I’m enjoying my football, physically and mentally. Keep enjoying the game because it’s a beautiful game that we play and I play.”

Slot has also repeatedly done his best to avoid giving a running commentary of negotiations with Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold and Salah, all of whom have established themselves as influential figures at Anfield in recent years.

Van Dijk revealed earlier earlier in the week that talks between his representatives and the club were “ongoing” in a bid to come to an agreeement.

He said: “I can say obviously discussions are ongoing, but I don’t know, we will see what happens in the future. My very full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else.

“What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have been started up and we will see.”

Liverpool continued their fine start to the season under Slot, with their second half fightback at The Emirates meaning that the Dutchman has lost just one of his first nine Premier League matches, seven of which have been wins.

The Reds face Brighton next in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night before they meet again in the league at the weekend. Slot’s men will also face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League before locking horns with Aston Villa before the international break.
