An important update has been confirmed by Virgin Media, and now is a very good time to have a quick look at your router. The UK Internet Service Provider (ISP) is currently writing to customers who are using older equipment, explaining that a free upgrade is available. There’s even more good news: even if you haven’t yet received the a message, Virgin will still switch things up if your router is now outdated.

Once the new box arrives, it will not only offer an improved experience but also make sure you and your devices stay safe.

A number of Virgin’s older Wi-Fi routers are no longer receiving vital security updates, which means they could be much more prone to bugs and cyber attacks.

It’s something the UK Government wants to stop with a recent update to the law, forcing ISPs to offer and update Wi-Fi devices that they can’t keep safe.

“Today marks a new era where consumers can have greater confidence that their smart devices, such as phones and broadband routers, are shielded from cyber threats, and the integrity of personal privacy, data and finances better protected,” said Julia Lopez, UK Data and Digital Infrastructure Minister during the initial announcement.

ISPs, including Virgin, must now make sure all of their broadband devices comply with the rules.

“We’re aware you’ve got one of our oldest Hubs, either a Hub 1, Hub 2 or a Hub 2 AC,” a message spotted by the team at ISPreview explains.

“Although they still work, they no longer receive security updates. The UK Government has updated the law about telecommunications networks and keeping you safe online, and we need to offer you a free Hub replacement.

“The good news is, our Hub 4 is more secure, faster and offers improved power consumption.

“There’s no need to change your current package or sign a new contract.”

Virgin Media router – some hub are now out of date

So, how do you know you need an update? Firstly, if you get the letter from Virgin is important that you act and take delivery of the new box.

If you haven’t had a letter, it’s pretty easy to check if things are outdated.

Find your router. If it has a more curvacous appearance, like the one pictured above, it’s likely that you have a Hub 1 or Hub 2 and you need an upgrade. Hub 3 and Hub 4 routers have a more box-shaped design with sharper edges.
