A pitch invader was knocked over by Walsall defender David Okagbue before being dragged away by a steward after trying to get towards Leicester manager Steve Cooper

A pitch invader who tried to reach Leicester manager Steve Cooper was unwittingly floored by a Walsall player during a drab Carabao Cup match.

The Leicester fans who travelled to the Poundland Bescot Stadium on Tuesday night were left disappointed as their side struggled to break down Walsall. The League Two side put up a good fight against their Premier League opponents, forcing penalties after a 0-0 draw.

The travelling supporters were not happy with what they saw from their side – and one youngster decided to charge onto the pitch to make his feelings heard in the second half. He tried to make his way towards the Leicester dugout and was reportedly shouting at manager Steve Cooper before he was brought down to earth.

Walsall defender David Okagbue brought the pitch invasion to a halt by tackling the young lad, allowing a chasing steward to drag him away. Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury was then seen sharing some choice words with the supporter.

Leicester had nearly 75 per cent possession but failed to threaten the Walsall goal much, with the home side having the better chances. The frustration was clear, with boos from the away end greeting the full-time whistle before penalties.

The Foxes soon had something to be cheerful about, though, with Danny Ward saving Walsall’s first two spot-kicks as the Premier League side took control of the shoot-out. Taylor Allen and Okagbue were both denied by the Welshman from 12 yards, while Ricardo Pereira and Conor Coady netted to make it 2-0.

Ward then made it three saves from three by keeping out Liam Gordon, meaning Oliver Skipp’s successful penalty was enough to win it 3-0 and send Leicester through to the next round.

“Walsall deserve more than that,” former Premier League defender Curtis Davies said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “They should keep their heads up and are flying in League Two. They went toe-to-to with a Premier League team and forced them to penalties. I think they can take that and improve on their league form even more.”
