UK broadband users have been urged to check their accounts and switch or haggle to save money.

Broadband and TV users across the UK are being urged to check their plans without delay. That’s a new warning from the team at consumer group Which? who says not paying attention to those monthly bills and making some simple changes could be costing homes as much as £235.

According to the very latest Which? stats, those users who are currently out-of-contract with TV and broadband firms such as BT or Virgin Media can save around £160 on average just by switching to a new supplier. Things get even better for those with Sky plans with Which? suggesting that those customers could slash bills by a whopping £235 if they shop around.

Changing to a new provider sound like too much hassle? Those who ring their current company and haggle could find they are suddenly £117 better off with most suppliers happy to agree to lower bills to stop users from leaving.

Along with internet and TV bundles, Which?’s latest research also found that there were big savings available for those simply wanting internet access. Customers who switched broadband providers saw £105 of savings on average with those moving from Virgin Media seeing a bigger amount of £165 back in their bank accounts.

Which?’s survey found that price was the most common reason for switching but that people also frequently benefitted from better customer service, faster download speeds and better connections.

Speaking about the latest stats Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, said: “Our latest research shows out-of-contract broadband, TV and mobile customers can save a substantial amount of money by switching providers or haggling with their current one – and that most people find the process easy.

“With many telecoms providers already adopting Ofcom’s ban on unpredictable mid-contract price hikes before it officially comes into effect in January, consumers can more easily compare deals and should feel empowered to switch and potentially save hundreds of pounds.”
