Plymouth fans have hit out at manager Wayne Rooney for reportedly dropping out of a club event for children, where supporters were supposedly being charged £40 a head, only to be pictured at a Christmas market
Wayne Rooney’s visit to a Christmas market with wife Coleen has been met with fury – after the under-fire Plymouth boss cancelled an appearance at a club event.
Rooney is under big pressure at Home Park after overseeing four consecutive defeats, with the Manchester United legend’s future at the Championship club looking bleak if their current situation does not improve.
And fans’ weren’t impressed after he apparently dropped out of a club Christmas event for children – where supporters were supposedly being charged £40.
One fuming fan questioned why Rooney had cancelled only to be pictured in his wife Coleen’s story enjoying a Christmas market in Manchester. He wrote: “There’s some Christmas celebration taking place today for kids – meet and greet the players and manager etc at £40 a pop. Parents got an email last night saying Wayne Rooney couldn’t make it today. He’s swanning around Christmas Markets with the family. Absolute con.”
Another supporter replied saying: “This is very poor optics. Should be spending as much time on training ground as possible. No problem seeing his wife after a while but why can’t she be down in Devon for a few days and he can still work?”
A third called him a “part-time manager” but one defended the 39-year-old and suggested it was understandable given he has not seen Coleen for three weeks after her appearance on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.
Rooney and his wife were reunited for the first time last Monday, after Coleen landed back in the UK. The ex-United star was not at Manchester Airport to greet her as she arrived home with sons Kit and Cass on December 11.
Rooney is under growing pressure at Plymouth with the side having slid down the Championship table. They are 23rd at present, but Rooney has insisted he is eager to sign more players next month despite being linked with the sack.
“There is always honest conversations between myself, Neil (Dewsnip, director of football), Andrew (Parkinson, chief executive officer, Simon – whoever that may be – about how can we improve, and from a recruitment point of view what players can we bring in to help, what players do we need, what players do we need to get out.
“Getting the injured players back will be like new signings for us but we all know, we are under no illusion, we need to improve the squad, that’s there for everyone to see. We are working extremely hard to put ourselves in the best position to do that as early as possible.”
