Wayne Rooney was sacked by Championship side Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday after a disastrous few months but the Manchester United icon might not be out of work for very long
Wayne Rooney is set to be offered a huge contract to change career after his Plymouth sacking.
The Manchester United icon left Home Park on Tuesday after a horrendous six months in charge of the Championship side. Rooney won just four league games at the helm and leaves the club bottom of the Championship.
It was the fourth time in just two-and-a-half years that the 39-year-old has left a job after prior exits from Derby County, DC United and his sacking by Birmingham. Despite that, there is still a clamour for Rooney’s services – particularly from broadcasters.
Reports suggest the former striker will be offered lucrative deals by TV channels to become a pundit. He has previously appeared on ITV and Sky.
A source quoted by The Sun said: “Wayne is regarded as one of the best pundits in the business. He’s very, very knowledgeable about the game. And even though he’s actually quite a shy person, he really feels at home in a TV studio.”
They added: “It’s been a rubbish end to 2024 for Wayne, but he’s not going to be out of work for long. He’ll be offered punditry work straight away and there’s interest from Sky in a potential long-term deal to tie him down as a pundit.
“Wayne still harbours ambitions of making it as a manager. But, like Gary Neville, it might end up being the case that he can carve out a more successful and lucrative career as a pundit rather than as a manager in the dugout.”

Rooney has already spoken out after his Plymouth exit. Writing in a statement, he said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with.
“Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future. To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever.
“I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, help and support. Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
