Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones said the path to making ordinary people better off is ‘a longer one that I would like’ but promised ‘that won’t deter us’
I know Mirror readers are sick and tired of an economy that doesn’t work for them.
The damage done to it over fourteen years has been devastating. And there are no easy fixes.
The path to a growing economy that improves living standards for people across the country is a longer one than I would like, but that won’t deter us.
We made a promise to make the country better off, to grow our economy and put more money in working people’s pockets.
We remain committed to that promise, despite the hurdles we will face.
This week we’ll see inflation figures out on Wednesday, and growth numbers on Thursday.
These statistics might paint a picture of where we are but won’t reflect where this government is taking us.
Already we’ve started planning reforms that will get Britain building and help provide 1.5 million new homes.
We’ve invested more capital investment in our towns and cities to drive growth, and we are unlocking millions of pounds of private investment through the National Wealth Fund to create jobs and wealth across the country.
And yesterday the Prime Minister set out how we will make the UK an AI superpower, turbocharging growth across the country.
We did not say the path to restore the country would be an easy one. But we are charting a course for a decade of renewal through our Plan for Change.
Even with the changes we’ve put into action since the election, growing the economy is a huge challenge.
That’s why we haven’t stopped looking for ways to do it and will leave no stone unturned to deliver the change we want to see.
An economy that works for working people and better living standards across the country.
