WhatsApp users have been left mortified when they worked out a subtle change to the app, and they demanded that developers change it back to how it was as soon as possible

WhatsApp is a messaging app used by approximately two billion people worldwide – but when they made a subtle change, users were left panicking.

Eagle-eyed texters have been “thrown off” by the update that the Meta-owned app made in recent days, saying that it completely changed their perception of it. Some have even demanded that the app developers revert the changes as soon as possible because they hate the way it looks now.

So, what is it that’s causing such a commotion? Is it a privacy feature? Or are the chats no longer end-to-end encrypted? No, it’s the capitalisation of the ‘online’, ‘typing’, ‘recording audio’ and ‘last seen’ statuses, reports Wales Online.

A number of WhatsApp users have noticed that those messages in the app now have a capital letter at the beginning. TikTok user Ellie, known as @ellsdq, took to the social media platform to vent her frustrations.

In a video, she said: “Is anybody else getting really thrown off about the capital O on ‘online’, the capital T on ‘typing’, and capital R on ‘recording a voice note’ on WhatsApp? It’s throwing me off and it’s irritating me.”

Other WhatsApp users vented their own annoyances about the subtle update, saying that they really weren’t happy with it and it had “lost its aesthetic” due to the change.

Some other comments included: “I thought nobody else had noticed it”, “I thought I was going mad”, “Do you think the updates team just had nothing to do this week and had to change something to look like they were working?”, and “Omg I’ve been staring at this for the last 2 days wondering why it looks so strange to me.”

However, some WhatsApp users were completely oblivious to the changes, with one penning: “I have read receipts off and seen online off, I’m here for the peaceful life. I didn’t even realise”, and another admitting: “I haven’t had this update. I hope it never comes”.
