Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle all advanced to the Carabao Cup last four after defeating Premier League opposition but they must wait to learn their next opponents

Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United have booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals but they must wait another 24 hours to find out the pairings for the two-legged affair in the new year.

The draw will take place after Thursday night’s concluding last eight between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in north London.

Semi-final first leg games will take place on the midweek of January 8 with the return fixtures on the midweek of February 5 and the final is pencilled for Wembley on March 16.

Cameron Archer pulled a goal back for Saints, who had interim Simon Rusk in charge while the club pursues a successor for Russell Martin.

Newcastle were quick off the mark against Brentford at St James’ Park with Sandro Tonali putting Eddie Howe’s men in front after only eight minutes and he scored a second nearing half-time against Thomas Frank’s weary travellers. Fabian Schar

Jean Philippe Mateta had put Palace in front at the Emirates but Gabriel Jesus, without a goal at the Emirates for a year, scored a stunning hat-trick to guide Mikel Arteta’s men into the last four – although former Gunner Eddie Nketiah provided a late consolation.
