I’m A Celeb: GK Barry reveals how she came out to her parents
TikTok sensation GK Barry left her followers gobsmacked after an accidental reveal of her bisexuality during a podcast chat earlier this year.
In love with Ipswich Town’s football ace Ella Rutherford, GK typically kept the romance hush-hush until Ella’s birthday shoutout on Instagram reaffirmed their bond in August, posting: “Happy Birthday babe I love you more and more everyday.”
Moreover, GK explained her shift from men to women on Young Filly’s podcast, stating candidly: “I feel like I went very wrong with men. I don’t like men anymore. I will never go back to a man. God forbid. Yeah, I just love it. I just love it. I feel like I’ve got spring in my step. I feel like I’m glowing. It’s the lesbian glow. I’ve got it. And yeah, that’s my life update.”
GK discussed her relationship with Ella with her I’m A Celebrity campmates during this evening’s instalment of the ITV series. Getting closer round the campfire, Dean popped the question to GK about her journey of coming out. She revealed: “Obviously online I’d been like I’d slept with girls or whatever as well, but I’d only dated men.”
Recounting how she met her current partner, she said: “It was by accident I found Ella, through a mutual friend and then I really liked her the first day I met her but I’d never told my parents.” She added that her folks were already familiar with the name: “I’d mentioned, ‘Oh I’m just going to see my friend Ella’ or ‘I’m staying round Ella’s’ so they’d heard her name.” The moment of truth came when her parents questioned who Ella was during a visit, and GK confessed: “Oh. she’s my girlfriend”. Thankfully, she shared, her parents embraced Ella wholeheartedly: “They just love her, they never had an issue with it.”
With a touch of humour, she noted: “To be fair I feel like the closet may have been glass! ” Stressing her family’s open-mindedness, she continued: “They’ve always said whoever you end up with we do not care, boy or girl we don’t care, as long as they’re not a d*ck.” To which Jane echoed the sentiment: “All you ever want is for your kids to be happy, it doesn’t matter who it’s with.”
Before finding love with Ella, Grace was in a long-term relationship with TikTok sensation Billy Hunt, who was often seen accompanying her to events and even featured on her podcast. The pair were introduced by Gogglebox’s Joe Baggs and quickly became an item. Reflecting on their first encounter, Grace shared: “So my version of events. Joe Baggs had a party. [Billy was] the only straight man there, [I] launched myself at him. It’s been history ever since.”
However, just seven months after recording the podcast episode in early 2023, they announced their breakup. Addressing her fans directly, Grace stated: “I just want to start out by addressing the elephant in the room. I am single, and that’s it really. I’m not really going to go into why. I know a lot of you want to know why, all the deets, all the gossip, to be honest, I would too.” I’m not going to lie, but I will not be speaking about the reasons why. I’m just going to leave it as, I’m single, and that’s it. I know I put a lot of my relationship in the public eye. My bad, I won’t be doing that again! “.
