Camila Giorgi, who reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2018, has gone missing from the WTA and has reportedly decided to quit tennis to focus on modelling

Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi appears to have quit the sport to focus on her fashion brand and modelling career.

Giorgi reached the ranking of world No.26 after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2018. She has won four WTA ranking titles and was playing at the Miami Open, where she was beaten in straight sets by world No.1 Iga Swiatek, on March 23.

The 32-year-old has not played since then and did not apply to play at the upcoming French Open. She then shocked fans by being included on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s list of retired players, despite not making an official announcement of her decision.

Corriere della Sera has reported that the WTA has been unable to reach Giorgi or her family. The women’s tennis tour is understood to have been unaware of her retirement and strangely found that phones belonging to Giorgi, her father Sergio and her brothers Leandro and Amadeus had been disconnected.

But Marca says the decision has been made so she can focus on other interests. Even while pursuing tennis, Giorgi has amassed over 732,000 followers on Instagram, where she posts modelling pictures, as well as updates from her sporting career and travels. She has her own brand called Giomila and has wowed her fans with snaps of her in sportswear and lingerie.

Giorgi still calls herself an athlete on Instagram and uploaded a selfie to her story on May 7 with a caption that did not address the speculation over her tennis career.

It has been six years since the peak of her career, when she reached the last eight at Wimbledon, where she was beaten by eventual runner-up Serena Williams, and the quarter-finals at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

But she has continued to have moderate success over the past few years, lifting the biggest title of her career at the Canadian Open in 2021 after beating Karolina Pliskova in the final. Giorgi’s fourth and final trophy came at the Merida Open back in February 2023.

Giorgi raised eyebrows after saying she “doesn’t follow tennis” in reply to a question about Williams at Wimbledon in 2018.

She also was surrounded by controversy in 2022 after being accused of using a fake Covid vaccination certificate to get into the Australian Open.

She denied the claims, which came from an Italian doctor. “I did everything what they ask, the Australian government,” Giorgi told reporters. “Each year we are fine with that. Of course. I did all vaccination, yes.”
