A woman who was working at an animal feed company has died at work, after a huge bag fell on top of her. The woman, who has not been named, was operating a forklift carrying animal feed Wednesday evening.
She got off to repair a torn item, and a 1,000-pound bag (approx 450kg) of animal feed fell, trapping her underneath. The Vergennes Police Department said the woman died at the scene in Vermont, USA, with the medical examiner later ruling her cause of death as asphyxia. Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration has yet to comment on the fatal workplace accident.
The incident comes just months after a man died following an accident at a business premises in the UK where he had become trapped under a forklift truck in Birmingham.
The man died at the scene in September and a police statement read at the time: “We were called to reports of a man trapped under a forklift truck at a premises on Station Road, Erdington at around 10.14am this morning.
“A man believed to be his 50s was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
“Enquiries to establish exactly what happened are ongoing and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.”
An ambulance service spokeswoman said that there was nothing that paramedics could do when they arrived at the scene.
They said: “We were called to an industrial incident on Station Road at 10.11am, two ambulances and a paramedic officer attended the scene.
On arrival we discovered one patient, a man. Sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
People have taken to social media to offer their condolences with one person saying: “So terribly said,” and another person commented: “Rest in peace x thinking of family and friends.”
