Former World Cup star Jorge Bolano has sadly passed away at the age of 47. The ex-Colombia international is said to have suffered a heart attack after celebrating with his family on a special birthday occasion in Cucuta, Colombia. Despite being swiftly taken to hospital, Bolano couldn’t be saved.
A flood of tributes have come in from ex-team-mates and admirers alike across social platforms for the beloved Serie A icon. Among these, Gianluigi Buffon, who played alongside Bolano at Parma, shared his heartfelt remembrance.
Taking to social media, Buffon penned: “Jorge was an unforgettable friend and team-mate, a constant in a locker room of extraordinary champions. We played and won together in the golden years of a great Parma.
“On the pitch he fought without sparing himself and, off the pitch, I fondly remember his kindness and humanity that made him an example for everyone. We will always carry you with us, rest in peace, my friend.”
Beginning his ascent to footballing fame in Colombia with Atletico Junior back in 1993, Bolano devoted six years before venturing to Italy, proudly donning the Parma jersey, reports the Daily Star.
Sharing glory with Buffon, lifted the Coppa Italia trophy for Parma during the 2001/02 season and witnessed their ascension to the revered Champions League.
His career continued with loans to Sampdoria and Lecce, prior to cementing his place at Modena in 2007.
Post two fruitful years, he returned to Colombian pitches with Cucuta Deportivo in 2010, hanging up his boots two years later.
Having notched up 36 caps for Colombia, along with a memorable goal, Bolano shone bright in the 1998 World Cup for his country.
