Mum and lifestyle expert Vicky Gilchrist has gone viral after showing off her simple but ‘genius’ hack to keep cereal fresh for longer – without having to buy fancy storage bags

Save your beloved coco pops from going off with this mum’s genius hack.

Cereal has long been a breakfast staple amongst Brits – whether you like to keep things simple with a bowl of Cornflakes or love to guzzle down the chocolatey milk leftover from a small mountain of Weetos. But amidst the cost of living crisis, the price tag on our cult fave cereals have skyrocketed – meaning every single shredded wheat counts more than ever. For example, families used to be able to buy a ‘big’ box of Kellogg’s Coco Pops for £3. Now, the new ‘mega’ size has three fewer servings (650g) yet it is £1 dearer.

Reducing waste by keeping your food fresh and properly stored is one of the easiest ways to save money when it comes to your weekly grocery shops. Plus, let’s face it, nobody likes a stale-tasting rice crispie in the morning. Luckily, there’s a pretty simple hack to make your cereal last longer.

Vicky Gilchrist is a mum and lifestyle expert who has amassed a whopping 131,000 followers on TikTok thanks to her money-saving tips and tricks. In a recent video, the hack lover showed off three simple kitchen tips that she says has ‘changed her life’. When it comes to cereals, Vicky folds down one of the long flaps on the box, then tucks in the two shorter tabs – carefully folding them in half to pinch in the top of the box. She then folds the last long flap down and reveals how the cereal is now completely sealed. It’s also worth making sure the plastic bag containing the cereals is tightly secure.

Vicky also shows how to keep bread fresh for longer, by twisting a half-eaten loaf then wrapping the leftover packaging back over the remaining slices to make sure they’re well sealed. For bags of popcorn (if there’s any left) she folds the packaging down and tucks the folds into themselves to stop it from unravelling.

At the time of writing, the simple but effective hack has garnered a staggering 8.9 million views and more than 755,000 likes. Thousands of impressed viewers flocked to the comments section to hail the hack and tag their friends and family in the video. “Wow the cornflakes one is genius!” one user raved. Another agreed, commenting: “It’s the cereal box I’m going to try.” A third added: “I’m [going to] try these hacks. They’re really helpful actually,” while a fourth joked: “You know your getting old when you find this exciting.”
