Leny Yoro was one of Manchester United’s landmark signings last summer and despite a slow start to his career with the Red Devils, he seems to be enjoying life in the North West

Leny Yoro has broken rank and done what few overseas Manchester United stars have done – praised the weather.

The French defender joined the Red Devils for big money last summer. And despite seeing his first few months ruined by injury, he has enjoyed life in Manchester, even the climate, despite its infamous reputation.

“Honestly, everything is going well,” he told Telefoot. “I’ve got everything I need. The team is welcoming, and there are other young players, which helps. The weather is similar to the north of France, so that’s not much of a change.

“The language is coming along; I’m starting to get used to speaking properly. I understand now, because the hardest part is sometimes understanding what they’re saying with the accent, but it’s going well.”

Yoro might be getting a call from a few former United stars to dispute his claim. Take a look at what they’ve said below:

Cristiano Ronaldo

A two-time Man United player, the Portuguese forward has enjoyed two spells at Old Trafford. He initially played for the club between 2003 and 2009, before rejoining for an 18-month spell in 2021.

And despite admitting his love for the Red Devils, one thing annoyed him. Speaking in 2006, Ronaldo said: “I like to play for Manchester – better than [I like] the weather.

“The weather is very difficult for me because you see snow, every time, and rain. It’s difficult compared to Portugal, where you see sun every day, which is why it’s difficult for me. But the club is massive and I’m very happy for staying here.”

Anthony Martial

Another to be signed as a teenager, French forward Anthony Martial flattered to deceive during his time with United. He still however racked up a somewhat impressive record of 90 goals in 317 appearances.

Like Ronaldo, the forward was not left particularly convinced by the weather. Asked what he didn’t like about Manchester, he said: “Manchester weather, cooking when I’m tired and English cuisine.”

Martial has since ventured to warming climes. He spent six months on loan with Spanish side Sevilla and is now with Greek outfit AEK Athens.

Carlos Tevez

A controversial figure when it comes to United and their fierce rivals Manchester City, the Argentinian forward spent a total of nine years in England – six of them in Manchester. And he enjoyed great success, scoring over 100 goals for the two North West clubs and winning three Premier League titles.

Despite that, Tevez has vowed never to step foot in his former home city ever again. He said: “There is nothing to do in Manchester. The weather, everything.

“It has nothing and the problem is I am still speaking very poor English. When I finish my contract I will not return to Manchester ever, not even on holiday. Not for anything.”

Angel Di Maria

From one Argentinian to another, playmaker Angel Di Maria is considered as one of United’s biggest flops of all time. He was signed from Real Madrid in 2014 but spent just one solitary season in England.

To be fair to Di Maria, a shocking break-in at his Cheshire home did nothing to warm him to Manchester. The weather however still left him – and his wife – feeling very chilly.

Speaking to Sport Magazine, he said: “It’s much colder here and it gets dark a lot earlier than in Spain. I have no problem with the food or anything – there is not much difference between what I had in Spain and what I have here. My only problem is with the cold temperatures.”

Nemanja Vidic

One of the stalwarts of Sir Alex Ferguson’s last great Man United side, Serbian defender Vidic enjoyed plenty of success at Old Trafford. He won no less than ten major honours with the Red Devils including five Premier League crowns.

But even he was less than inspired with the lack of sun in Manchester. Speaking in 2016, he said: “I struggled with the weather in the beginning,” he told FourFourTwo magazine in 2016.

“Moscow is cold in the winter, but you don’t have rain – you have sunshine,” he added. “The only thing I had a problem with was the weather. I really enjoyed Manchester, the social life and its people.”
