With Christmas party season approaching, you’ll want your make-up to look it’s best – and stay looking it’s best, without any smudging, flaking or slipping off. Here’s how…

With Christmas parties and festive gatherings on the horizon, it’s crucial to ensure your make-up stays flawless all day (or night) long, without any smudging, flaking or slipping off.

To tackle this common beauty issue, we’ve sought advice from celebrity make-up artist Hannah Martin, who has worked with famous faces like Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Dame Helen Mirren. Here, she shares her top professional tips for long-lasting make-up, and we share some of our favourite products.

It’s this kind of practical advice makes Hannah’s own beauty advent calendar one of the best buys this year. Packed with 26 of Hannah’s favourite make-up, skincare and beauty items, it’s a steal at £100 but worth over £570 – and it’s still available for purchase before December.

Here are Hannah’s proven tips for perfect, long-lasting make-up…

Step one: Skin prep

“Proper skin preparation is crucial,” advises Hannah. “If you use a moisturiser that’s too rich for your skin or too slippery under your foundation, you’ll struggle to keep your foundation in place.” This is why you’ll find plenty of excellent skincare products in Hannah’s 2024 advent calendar, including Gatineau Collagene Expert Ceramide Smoothing Cream.

We love: Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream is a favourite for red carpet makeup preparation for good reason – it’s fantastic. However, if you have combination-to-oily skin, it might feel a bit rich. Instead, try the lighter Charlotte’s Magic Water Cream, starting at £23.

Step two: Powder

“I’m old school so I like powder,” Hannah shares. “I generally don’t ‘bake’, but I will use loose powder on a small fluffy brush in the areas where it’s needed, specifically the T-zone.”

We love: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, currently priced at £28.88, is a cult classic and celebrity favourite (including Molly-Mae Hague) for good reason – it mattifies and sets make-up in a very natural-looking way, without caking or dryness. You’ll currently find it with 25% off on LookFantastic.

Step three: Setting spray

“You can also use make-up setting sprays,” Hannah suggests. “However, I prefer to dry and set the make-up with powder, then the setting spray is your insurance.”

We love:Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, currently £19.95, is one of the best – including with our shopping team. It’s barely detectable on the skin, yet it’ll secure your make-up look.
