Dee Rosewarne asked for advice on how to stop her freshly washed clothes from smelling musty every time, and fellow Facebook users were quick to share their simple hack

Struggling to keep your freshly laundered clothes smelling crisp and clean? Pesky musty smells on your clothes could be down to several easily fixed issues.

Common culprits behind those niffy whiffs include improperly dried threads, cramming too much into one wash, or scrimping on the suds. But sometimes, it’s not just about your laundry habits; a grubby washing machine can reek of stale detergent and softener build-upnot to mention sprouting mould or dank mildew.

Dee Rosewarne knows the drill all too well; she shared her woes with fellow cleaning aficionados on the Facebook group ‘Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips’: “So fed up with my washing machine. All my washing comes out with this horrid musty smell, especially towels.”, reports the Express.

“I clean the machine regularly and always leave the door and dispenser drawer open after use, and make sure there’s no water left in the drum seal by putting kitchen roll in to soak up any excess. I’m not sure what else I can do but it’s driving me nuts.” Seeking a solution, the top tip from the hive mind was crystal clear: pop soda crystals into every load.

Leehann Carly Stafford also chipped in with a game-changing routine: “Clean filter door too monthly. Use soda crystals in the drum when washing whites or towels – it cleans the washer too. Add white vinegar to the drawer for towels or whites. Again, it cleans the clothes and washer. This routine changed my wash. Saves cleaning! “.

Sarah J Kilsby doled out some laundry advice, stating: “White vinegar and soda crystals on 90C wash or a dishwasher tablet. Also, reduce the amount of clothes you put in.” Ann Roberts chimed in with her trick: “Use liquid detergent and an empty hot wash with soda crystals.”

Jenny Charlesworth offered up a tip as well: “Try a scoop of soda crystals in every wash.” Val Cornwall recommended a straightforward solution: “Try a packet of soda crystals and put on a boil wash.”

Rebecca Palmer shared her method for fresh garments: “Put a scoop of soda crystals in every wash with your powder and fabric softener. It gets rid of the horrible smells and everything comes out lovely and clean.”

These versatile soda crystals are not only great at softening water and keeping washing machines limescale-free, but they also tackle tough stains with ease. For those looking to give their washing a soda crystal boost, a pack can usually be snapped up from the local supermarket for about £2.
