Air fryers have become a popular kitchen appliance in recent years, but there’s one cleaning method that’s been labelled as ‘dumb’ and ‘risky’ by experts in the know

With skyrocketing energy costs and the cost of living crisis squeezing households, air fryers, claimed to be 50 per cent more energy-efficient than traditional ovens, have soared in popularity.

They have become an essential gadget for busy families looking for a quick and uncomplicated means to whip up meals.

Another advantage lies in the cut-down on washing up; however, maintaining cleanliness in your air fryer is vital for its efficient functioning. Alert has been raised over a particular cleaning method, precisely the one watchdogs like Which? have previously hailed as “the dumbest way to clean your air fryer and burn down your house.”

The method involves filling the air fryer basket with warm soapy water and switching it on, aiming to get rid of any lingering dirt, reports the Express.

But cleaning experts, including those at the brand Method, recommend alternative, safer cleaning techniques to extend your device’s lifespan.

Most crucially, it is advised to clean your air fryer post every use. The experts said: “This will avoid any oil, grease and grime setting in as it will be much harder to clean the basket if you have to scrub hard food residue away.”

Neglecting regular cleaning could lead to minor debris and dirt being scorched the next time you cook, potentially imparting an acrid taste to your food.

To safely clean your air fryer, start by removing the basket and tray and immerse them in a sink filled with warm soapy water. Let these parts soak for about 10-15 minutes for optimal results.

Then, using a sponge or soft-bristle brush, give the tray and basket a good scrub before rinsing them off. Dry each part thoroughly with a clean towel.

Ensure both components are entirely dry before you use them again, as any residual moisture could potentially harm the appliance. Additionally, wipe down the interior of the air fryer with a damp cloth, ensuring no spots of grease are left behind.

The exterior of the air fryer can also accumulate dust, fingerprints, and grease, so it’s crucial to wipe it down, focusing particularly on buttons and the control panel.

Avoid spraying cleaning solution directly onto electronic parts to prevent causing any damage. Once all parts of the air fryer are clean, let them air dry fully or pat them dry with a clean towel before putting everything back together.
