Marcus Rashford has struggled for form over the last 18 months and Manchester United are said to be weighing up whether or not sell their academy graduate in the transfer window

Marcus Rashford must decide whether or not he wants to play for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, according to Alan Shearer.

Rashford, who has been at Old Trafford since 2005, has struggled over the last 18 months, and there are rumblings that United are plotting to offload the 27-year-old forward to free up some much needed cash which will enable Amorim to reshape his squad.

Amorim is also known to favour a 3-5-2 formation, and his arrival had led to questions whether Rashford, who prefers to play wide on the left, would find a place in his new-look team.

But Betfair ambassador Shearer said: “It’s not so much whether he fits in the system, it’s whether he wants to.

“I saw him three years ago scoring 30 goals a season, so the talent is there. But we haven’t seen anywhere near that for a long time now, so I don’t know if anything’s gone on in his life or anything like that.

“There’s only one guy who can answer [whether he fits] – or two guys with the manager – and that’s him with his attitude, his performances and his belief. But he’s gone from [being up there] to way down in such a short space of time, so clearly something is not right somewhere.

“I don’t see a happy player there.”

Rashford has scored three times since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag, and will be hoping to feature when the former Sporting Lisbon chief takes charge of his first Manchester derby today.

The Portuguese coach may have got one over on Pep Guardiola and his out of sorts City team in the Champions League with Sporting last month, but Shearer isn’t convinced that will count for much today.

He added: “It’s really tough to call. I would just go with the home team I guess, only because of that reason. It’s difficult to have any confidence in either team at the minute with the way they’re playing.

“City, with the ridiculously high standards that they’ve set, are obviously having a torrid time – they’re far too open, conceding goals and it’s uncharted waters for Pep. He’s never had it this bad anywhere.

“But there’s so much work to do at United and Amorim has got a really tough, and long job, on his hands to try and get that right.

“There’s so many things wrong both on and off the pitch, as we’ve seen with the recent news about [sacked United sporting director] Dan Ashworth.”
