It’s not just politicians vying for your vote today, a supermarket has challenged people to cast their ballot for which chocolate caterpillar should be named best in the UK
Supermarket Aldi has taken a major election swipe at its rivals with a ballot paper taunt over who would win the caterpillar cake vote.
The supermarket chain fired a cheeky jibe at its rivals in a post shared to X/Twitter that aimed to settle who has the superior caterpillar cake. Most major supermarkets have their own caterpillar cake and it has long been a topic in offices around the country about who has the superior product.
But Aldi hopes to rig the vote for its own chocolaty caterpillar Cuthbert, naming him as a candidate for the fictitious “The People’s Party.” “Democracy has never been sweeter #GeneralElection2024,” Aldi posted.
Other contenders include M&S’s Colin – of the “Legally a Different Party,” Waitrose’s Cecil – of “The Overpriced Avocado Party,” Charlie from the Co-op, Tesco’s Slinky – representing the “Clubcard Members Party,” Asda’s Letty – from the “Attempted Price Match Party,” and Sainsbury’s very own Wiggles of the “Just Here for a Good Time Party.” Shockingly, Morrisons’ Morris the Caterpillar was left off the ballot.
The ballot paper text read: “Election for the Member of Parliament for the Cake Constituency. Vote for only one candidate by putting a cross in the box next to your choice.”
Since being shared on election day (July 4) the post has attracted a staggering 1.1million views. More than 17,000 people liked the post while another 2,000 retweeted it. It didn’t take long for people to share their caterpillar cake ballots with several selecting Aldi’s own Cuthbert. But, in a shocking election day twist, Colin also managed to hoover up some of the votes.
Many other X/Twitter users shared their honest opinion about the ballot, indicating they would prefer the chocolate candidates to PM Rishi Sunak and his rivals. “Brilliant, I’d be much happier with these election candidates,” Barbara Atterson posted.
X account SomeCallMeLaz added: “There’s no Cuthbert near me, so I’m honestly not sure what my tactical birthday cake purchase should be in a few weeks.” Aaron Michael Read posted: “Think I got mine [ballot paper] earlier in the week. Caterpillar cakes have become a British institution and fallouts can happen over how they are sliced. Earlier this year, Brits were triggered and looked away from the “evil” slicing of a Colin the Caterpillar cake.
Someone’s boss took an unusual approach by slicing the M&S cake down the middle before sectioning it into smaller pieces. Heartbroken Brits soon shared their outrage online.
The original post read: “A scroll of my old photos have reminded me of when my South African boss absolutely massacred a Colin.” One user quote-tweeted the original post with a clip of Paul Merson from Sky Sports, who could be heard saying: “Bang. See you later, you’re going to prison. You’re going to prison and you’re getting named and shamed.”
