The O2 network is telling UK consumers to check their old tech or miss out on free cash.

If you’ve recently upgraded your Android or iPhone, don’t ignore a new warning from the team at O2. The UK phone network says it’s vital that gadget fans think about what they are doing with old devices and trade them in if they are no longer of any use.

In fact, new research from Virgin Media O2 suggests that the average UK home might be missing out on over £200 by sticking old phones and laptops in a cupboard and forgetting they are there.

The longer these gadgets sit gathering dust, the less money they could be worth which is why it’s a good idea to get rid of them as soon as possible.

“Research from Virgin Media O2 has revealed the average UK household is sat on over £218 worth of unwanted mobile phones, but only one in ten (11%) Brits has traded in a device in the last five years,” O2 explained.

“Sell your unwanted mobile, laptop or tech as soon as you’re done with it. The sooner you sell it, the more money you’re likely to get for it.”

Along with getting money back in your bank account, devices that are handed over are often recycled which is also far better for the environment.

If you want to know how much your device is worth, you can head to O2’s Recycle website and add details such as make and model and its condition.

WHAT YOUR PHONE COULD BE WORTH

iPhone 11 – £88

iPhone 13 – £158

Phone 14 – £209

Samsung Galaxy S23 – £178

Samsung Galaxy S22 – £100

Google Pixel 8 Pro – £180

O2 isn’t the only company offering trade-in deals. You’ll find plenty of other sites – such as MusicMagpie, Compare and Recycle and Mazuma – that will also take your old tech off your hands… so shop around.

Samsung and Apple will also drop the price of a new device when you hand over something old, so it’s worth checking these deals as well.

One thing you must not do is simply let those old gadgets sit gathering dust as you will be missing out on getting some cash back in your pocket.
