After having lived in the UK for several years, one American man has shared the food items available in all British supermarkets that ‘blew his mind’ when he first moved here.
When travelling somewhere new, it’s always a fun experience to see what different food habits or items locals use that we might never have heard of before. But have you ever thought about what kind of food items available in your everyday corner shop or local supermarket might leave tourists confused? This is something American Kjordy brought to attention for Brits as he went on to share the food items he found weird when he first relocated to the UK.
Having over 280,500 followers on TikTok, Kjordy made a video where he brought his viewers to his local supermarket to share the food items he found confusing or odd when he first made the move across the pond, but that he’s now come to love.
“As an American living in the UK, I gotta show y’all foods I never knew existed before moving here,” he said at the start of his video.
“Last time I was here, I found squeezable butter, so y’all in for a treat,” he added, before revealing the store in question was Sainsbury’s.
“First up, don’t get me wrong, we do have this back home, but the way they say it,” Kjordy started before revealing the item he was talking about was squirty cream.
He went on to say that when he first told his dad about the fact Brits call this type of whipped cream ‘squirty cream’, his dad had not believed him and was convinced it was a joke. But alas, he was soon proven wrong.
Next up, he started out by saying he actually really liked this item, which ended up being Colin the Caterpillar cakes – or Giggles the Caterpillar which is Sainsbury’s equivalent.
“It’s basically just a big, long caterpillar cake, and every time someone has a birthday, it’s like iconic to bring it out,” he explained to his viewers.
Continuing with the third item, Kjordy said: “I didn’t realise how many types of cheeses there were, and how many different names there are.”
He went on to share a selection of the cheeses available in the store, including Ossau Iraty, Doux de Montagne, and three different types of gouda.
“Cause back in the US, all we know is cheddar, mozzarella, and American cheese,” he claimed.
For the last thing on his list, which he also claimed was one of the best discoveries he made while living in the UK, was the iconic Yorkshire puddings.
Explaining the food item at first had ‘thrown him off’ because it didn’t have the same consistency of pudding that he’s used to, he now loves it and considers it a staple when having a Sunday roast dinner.
Brits soon took to the comment section of the video to share their verdict, as one person said: “Imagine a cream that squirts out a tube… what should we call it? Surely not squirty cream that would be mental.”
Another person went on to say: “Squeeze butter? Never heard of or seen it? Ew!”
Some Americans were also left confused by things Kjordy said, as one person said: “Sir, your grocery store didn’t have a CHEESE SECTION? I am so sorry for you. We have a HUGE selection.”
“So this dude has never been to the cheese section in America,” another person stated.
