As the weather gets colder, spiders will start to make their way into our homes – there are a few simple tips you can follow to keep them at bay
Experts have shared three simple cleaning tips that could help banish spiders from your home this autumn. These straightforward methods can ensure you remove potential hideaways for the eight-legged creatures, reports Bristol Live.
The autumn presents particular difficulties for arachnophobes throughout Britain, as falling temperatures force these critters indoors seeking warmer, drier surroundings. The month also marks the beginning of their mating season, which means male spiders wander inside looking for potential partners.
For those who dislike these unwelcome guests, taking certain steps to spider-proof your house proves beneficial. Thankfully, experts have revealed that this approach can be both simple and affordable.
Pest UK has urged homeowners to adopt three cleaning strategies to reduce the likelihood of finding spiders indoors. According to their website, Pest UK advised:
- Clear the clutter
- Get rid of webs
- Vacuum regularly
Clear the clutter
Pest UK observed that spiders favour staying hidden in spots out of sight. It said: “They love hiding in boxes and packages while they wait for their prey.
“Keep your home tidy and free of clutter that could encourage spiders to take residence.”
Get rid of webs
The company advised: “Check your rooms regularly, particularly corners, for spider webs and remove them where ever you find them.”
Vacuum regularly
“Vacuum regularly and thoroughly, taking special care in awkward spots behind cupboards, in dark corners, and under sofas where spiders like to hide,” the company concluded.
This guidance is backed by Country Living, which noted: “Spiders like having somewhere to hide, so keep your house neat and tidy through regular tidying, cleaning and decluttering to prevent mess from building up.
“Plastic storage containers are better than cardboard boxes as they are harder for spiders to crawl into. Make sure to dust and vacuum frequently to rid your house of unwanted webs.”
Should these steps prove inadequate, you might also think about bringing the following plants into your home, as they are recognised for deterring spiders:
- Basil
- Rosemary
- Lavender
- Mint
- Chrysanthemum
- Citronella
