WOLVES 4-2 TOTTENHAM: Spurs were handed their 17th Premier League defeat of the season at Molineux on Sunday, with under-fire coach Ange Postecoglou left bemused on the touchline

Ange Postecoglou looked perplexed on the touchline as his Tottenham side were beaten 4-2 by Wolves

Never mind the leaks emanating from the training ground it’s those in the Tottenham defence which should be more worrying for under pressure boss Ange Postecoglou. A slipshod defensive display undermined any ambitions of a pick me up tonic before Thursday night’s season defining Europa League trip to Germany to face Eintracht Frankfurt.

Postecoglou was left bewildered and bemused on the touchline as born again Wolves inflicted the 17th Premier League defeat on his sorry side – 21 now in all competitions.

It’s a different story for the home side under Vitor Pereira, goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri, Jorgen Strand Larsen, the returning Matheus Cunha and an own goal from Djed Spence making it four wins on the spin in the top flight for the first time since 1972 when Wolves president Robert Plant’s Led Zeppelin were in their prime.

Any hopes of a trip to these parts being the calm before the Europa League storm were dashed after just 87 seconds for Postecoglou.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s free-kick saw Guglielmo Vicario’s attempted punched clearance fall to Ait-Nouri lurking on edge of the box who confidently lashed past the Italian whose only hope was Marshall Munetsi’s presence in an offside position on the line.

But eventually VAR’s Michael Oliver deemed the Wolves forward wasn’t in the Tottenham keeper’s eyeline and Spurs had made the worst possible start, enough to spark chants of ‘We Want Levy Out’ from some of the travelling fans.

Could Spurs with six changes from the impressive quarter-final first leg display against Eintracht Frankfurt repair the damage?

Well it looked possible with Jose Sa being forced to push out a venomous drive from Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson firing just over the bar in a period of Spurs dominance.

Postecoglou had to look at the replay monitor after Djed Spence’s calamitous own goal

Then seven minutes before the break it was calamity time at the back again as the Tottenham defence went into self destruct mode – a familiar trait this season.

Ait-Nouri delivered a deep cross and Munetsi’s glancing header was pushed out by Vicario but only against the unfortunate Spence, the ball spinning back over the line to leave a perplexed Postecoglou taking a look at the replay stream in the dug out hardly believing what he had just witnessed.

But a double substitution early in the second half reaped dividends for Postecoglou. He brought on Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur and within six minutes of their introduction it was 2-1, Nelson Semedo missing a Johnson cross for Mathys Tel to stroke home.

Matheus Cunha put the icing on the cake for Wolves as he beat Vicario to add a fourth late on

Normal service was soon resumed as Cristian Romero lost possession to Ait-Nouri who gave Strand Larsen the easiest of finishes to score for the fourth game running.

Richarlison’s bundled 84th minute finish gave Spurs some hope only for Cunha to beat Vicario in a one on one contest to snuff out any ambitions of a comeback.
