Arsenal are on the crest of a wave at present, topping the Premier League and riding high in the Champions League. As an added bonus, one of their big-money summer signings has rediscovered his scoring touch.

Viktor Gyokeres ended a seven-match goal drought with a quickfire brace in Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Gabriel headed home the first to trigger a 14-minute goal blitz after half-time. Gabriel Martinelli added a second with 64 minutes gone before Gyokeres got in on the act with the third and fourth goals to leave Diego Simeone’s side reeling.

Next up for Mikel Arteta’s side, who lead the Premier League by three points, is a trip to Crystal Palace. Mirror Football rounds up the latest news and views from the red half of north London…

Arteta sent new trophy demand

Former Gunners striker Jeremie Aliadiere says Arteta knows he must deliver a trophy to the Emirates this season. While the Spaniard has restored Arsenal as a force at home and abroad, he still has just one trophy to show for his efforts, the FA Cup back in 2020.

And following heavy summer spending, which has seen the club address its previous shortage of depth, there are no excuses for Arteta not winning something, ideally the Premier and/or the Champions League.

Aliadiere, who played under Arsene Wenger between 2001 and 2007, told WhichBookie: “It’s fair to say Mikel Arteta needs to win a trophy this season and I think he knows that himself. He’s had the backing of everyone at the club for years and they’ve given him all the tools and the players he needs.

“They’ve done their side of the deal, now he must deliver his. When you look at the Arsenal squad now, it’s probably the best in the Premier League.

“He has had a few years of being so close and finishing second, now he knows what he has to do to go and win it. From what I’ve seen this season, he is starting to do things differently in terms of rotating the squad and making substitutions to change games.

“I can’t see any negatives at the moment and I think this will finally be the season that Arsenal win the Premier League.”

Simeone verdict speaks volume

The chances of Arsenal finally ending their trophy drought this season appear to look promising, if Diego Simeone’s assessment if anything to go by.

Simeone issued a 10-word verdict on Arsenal after seeing his Atletico Madrid side blown away. Atletico have faced Liverpool and Real Madrid recently but Simeone said of the Gunners: “They are the best team we have faced this season.”

He added: “They compete so well, their players run and run, and they have quality all over the pitch. They deserved to win today and I want to congratulate them.

“It is a learning curve. We just need to keep improving. I thought we competed really well to begin with. From 60 minutes they were the better team and deserved to win.”
