Wolves star Matheus Cunha has been linked with a move to Arsenal throughout the winter transfer window but the in-form Brazilian looks set to stay beyond Monday’s 11pm deadline

Arsenal target Matheus Cunha made it clear that he’s not going anywhere before transfer deadline day with a telling celebration during Wolves’ 2-0 win against Aston Villa.

Cunha, 25, wrapped up Wolves’ victory in the 97th minute with another impressive goal, his 11th of the season. The Brazilian not only boosted Wolves’ survival hopes by securing the three points but also by strongly hinting that he won’t be ditching Vitor Pereira’s relegation-threatened side.

Wheeling away in celebration after blasting the ball past Emiliano Martinez, an emotional Cunha pointed to the Molineux turf, a message to say ‘I’m staying’. The ex-Atletico Madrid star then kissed the badge on his shirt, which he’d taken off. Cunha also made a signing gesture with his hands, as Wolves chiefs remain in talks over a new deal with their free-scoring No.10.

Arsenal have been the side most linked with Cunha’s signature, with the Gunners in desperate need of a forward. Noises coming from the player’s camp suggested that he was open to a move but any deal will now have to wait until the summer, with Wolves still at risk of dropping back down to the Championship for the first time since 2018.

Cunha isn’t the only striker on Arsenal’s radar, with Villa’s Ollie Watkins the subject of a £60million bid from the Gunners this week. That offer, however, was rejected.

Arsenal are also in the race to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, although they’d likely face competition from Manchester United. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko could be an option before Monday’s 11pm deadline but he’d cost a sizeable amount.

Cunha will instead be focussed on recovering ahead of Wolves’ trip to face Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fourth round next Sunday. “He has this quality. A special player. He’s committed with us,” Pereira told Sky Sports. “He knows in the future he can play for the best teams in England but he’s committed with us.”

The Wolves boss added: “Very happy. Very proud. We played a tough game. Tactically we played with quality. We played as a team with true spirit, working together and suffering together. I’m very happy. Important game not only for the three points but to break this [bad run]. We know it’s a long way, a difficult way. With our supporters and this spirit we can do it.”

Wolves are also closing in on the loan signing of Austria international defender Kevin Danso, who is due to have a medical on Sunday before joining until the end of the season.
