Essex police have said two people, a man and a woman, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision

Two children have died after a car crash, police have said. Essex Police confirmed that two people had been arrested in connection with the incident.

A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision, a police spokesperson confirmed.

The two youngsters died in crash on Walthams Place in Pitsea, Essex on Saturday evening shortly after 6pm. Police are appealing to the public for information following the fatal crash.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper said his thoughts were with the friends and family of the girl and boy who were being supported by specialist officers at this “unimaginably difficult” time.

The statement from Essex Police reads: “Two people have been arrested after two children died following a collision in Pitsea.

“We received a call at 6.25pm on Saturday 1 February reporting a girl and a boy had been involved in a collision with a car in Walthams Place. The car failed to stop at the scene.

“Emergency services attended the scene but, sadly, despite their efforts both children have died. A man and a woman have since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

“They are currently in custody.”

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper said: “My thoughts are with the friends and family of the girl and boy who have died this evening. Specialist officers are supporting them at this truly unimaginably difficult time.

“Our officers will be carrying out enquiries in the area this evening to establish the circumstances which led up to the collision so if you saw anything or have any information please get in contact.”

Police have appealed for anyone with CCTV, dash cam or doorbell footage to get in touch, as well as anybody who saw anything or has any information about the incident. Callers are asked to get in touch through the Essex Police website and to quote incident 931 of 1 February.
