Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta saw his side slip up again in the title race and the pressure is growing on the club hierarchy to sign a new attacking player in the transfer window
A weekend to forget, then, for Arsenal in the title race.
It had seemed like Mikel Arteta’s men would have the chance to close the gap on Liverpool at the Premier League summit with the Reds struggling to find a way past a resolute Brentford. But a quickfire brace from substitute Darwin Nunez piled the pressure back on the Gunners, who let a two-goal lead slip against Aston Villa to fall further behind their title rivals.
There has been plenty of talk about Arsenal and the transfer window, but it remains to be seen if they will splash the cash on a new striker. And time is now running out for big deals to be done.
Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news and gossip from The Emirates…
Isak speaks out
Alexander Isak may be at the top of Arsenal’s wishlist, but the sought-after Sweden international is happy at Newcastle.
Isak had been in red-hot form prior to Saturday’s shock 4-1 loss against Bournemouth. And while he blanked against the Cherries, his deadly finishing has generated interest from The Emirates.
With Arsenal seemingly in desperate need of a striker, moving for Isak is a move which has been called for. But not only would Newcastle demand a premium price for their talisman, the player himself has reiterated how happy he is at St James’ Park.
He told TNT Sports on Saturday: “Everywhere you go in this city, everyone is loving Newcastle, which is special. It is the best feeling I have had in my career. Scoring goals in front of these fans, it is special.”
Jorginho move at risk
Join the debate! Who do you want Arsenal to sign in January? Let us know here
Jorginho’s chances of joining Flamengo are now slim – seemingly due to the demands being made by the midfielder’s agent.
The Italy star is out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen where his future lies. There has been interest from overseas clubs, including Flemengo.
However, O Dia, via Sport Witness, say that Jorginho and his agent’s wage demands are seen by the club as ‘out of touch’, though a counter-offer has been made.
Gunners prep £10m swoop
Arsenal are ready to try and sign Sverre Halseth Nypan THIS month.
The 18-year-old Norwegian wonderkid is being pursued by a slew of elite clubs, including the Gunners and Manchester United.
Arsenal like the £10million-rated star, whose breakthrough at such a young age has seen him compared to compatriot Martin Odegaard. And TV2 have confirmed Arsenal want to do a deal in January rather than the summer.
