Arsenal are six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool and Mikel Arteta may look to strengthen his squad in the upcoming January transfer window to boost their title bid

Mikel Arteta on Bukayo Saka’s injury

Arsenal will spend Christmas Day sat third in the Premier League, with Mikel Arteta’s side six points behind top of the table Liverpool.

The Reds also have a game in hand over their rivals after the Merseyside Derby was postponed earlier this month due to Storm Darragh. As a result, Arsenal may look to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window and their hand may be forced after it emerged that star man Bukayo Saka is facing several months out of action with a hamstring injury.

There could also be some outgoings as Arsenal look to move on fringe players like Kieran Tierney, who has played just one game so far this season. Here are Mirror Football ‘s latest lines from around the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal ‘scout Retegui’

According to CalcioMercato, Arsenal are considering a move for Atalanta and Italy striker Mateo Retegui.

Arsenal are in the market for a new goalscorer and have been heavily linked with the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres in recent months. However, Retegui has now emerged as a potential alternative, with it claimed Arsenal sent scouts to watch him in action last month.

Retegui has scored 14 goals for Atalanta in 25 appearances across all competitions so far this season, having only joined the club from Genoa over the summer in a deal worth a reported €28million (£23m).

Gunners ‘eye Mitchell’

Arsenal are among several clubs interested in signing Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

The report states that Arsenal, Tottenham and Barcelona are all targeting the left-back, who has made almost 150 Premier League appearances for Palace since he made his first-team debut back in 2020.

Mitchell’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, meaning he could be available for a cut-price fee if Palace want to avoid losing him for free in the summer. It was reported back in September that Palace were set to enter negotiations with Mitchell over a new deal, but those talks appear to have stalled.

Goalkeeper targeted

Boca Juniors goalkeeper Leandro Brey has emerged as a target for Arsenal and the Gunners are considering a January swoop for the 22-year-old.

Brey has made 22 senior appearances for Boca and was part of the Argentina squad which reached the quarter-finals at the Paris Olympics, where they were beaten by eventual runners-up France.

Arsenal are understood to have sent scouts to watch him in action multiple times and Arteta has received positive reports about the goalkeeper. Brey’s current contract is due to expire in 2027 and he is said to be interested in a move to the Emirates, which could see him return to Boca on loan.
