There’s few things more frustrating than yanking out weeds from your lawn. Luckily there’s a cheap hack that will banish them for good. Even better, you probably have it lying around in your kitchen.

Common weeds include dandelions, chickweed and the dreaded prickly milk thistle. These invasive plants can spread like wildfire and suck nutrients from the soil, leaving the rest of your garden depleted. They can also be a hotbed for insects like mealy buds and aphids that like to chew up your plants.

More concerning, weeds can pose a structural threat to your home. They grow easily through cracks in patios and in walls, which can cause them to weaken over time.

Their roots also tend to dig deep under ground, making them tough to pull out. Some weeds, like dandelion, spread their seeds in the wind, meaning that they can crop up all over your garden.

Of course, it can be tempting to turn to a chemical weed killer. But these are usually filled with toxic ingredients that can cause irreparable damage to wildlife. Luckily, there is another solution that can work for your garden. You can mix vinegar with water to eradicate unwanted weed growth.

Simply mix one part vinegar with nine parts water. Then put the mixture in a spray bottle and spritz around the base of the weeds.

This method works because vinegar is highly acidic. When it comes into contact with the surface of a plant, it will break down its cell walls, ultimately killing it within a matter of hours or days.

You likely have a bottle of white vinegar lying around at home. However, don’t worry if not. You can pick up a bottle from Sainsbury’s for just 35p.

However, it’s important to note that vinegar won’t kill the roots of a plant – only the flower. This means that it serves a temporary solution.

Plus, you should be careful to only spritz vinegar on the leaves of the weeds. Accidentally spraying it on the surrounding grass or nearby plants can cause them to wither away.

If you’re looking for a more permanent solution, garden expert Peter Chaloner recommends a different solution instead, as reported by The Express. The best way to get rid of weeds for good is to dig them up.

He said: “The more effective way is to simply dig. Take a hand trowel, or even a specialised weeding trowel, and dig around the weed, but be sure to get deep under the root to make sure it is entirely removed and will not come back.”
