BBC Radio 2 star DJ Spoony has updated his fans on his health following emergency surgery last month after he complained of a month-long headache

DJ Spoony has provided his fans with a health update following his emergency surgery last month.

The BBC Radio 2 star told listeners in December that he had required surgery after suffering a bleed on his brain. It came after doctors discovered he had a subdural haematoma after he complained about a month-long headache.

Taking to social media at the time, DJ Spoony uploaded a number of snaps of him during his hospitalisation. He also shared his gratitude at being surrounded by his loved ones at Christmas following the ordeal. He described the support he was offer as being “humbling”.

Now, the 54-year-old disc jockey, whose real name is John Joseph, has offered a fresh update to his fans. He explained he was ‘healing amazingly’ and said he had been ‘overwhelmed’ by all the support he’d received since his operation.

Speaking to Radio 2 star Mark Goodier on his breakfast show, DJ Spoony said he wasn’t quite 100% yet, but was feeling “really good”. Mark had asked his fellow DJ: “The question I have to ask you is how are you feeling because people will have seen your social over Christmas. You are 100% better now?”

He responded: “Yeah thank you. I’m back to… You know my fitness isn’t where it was, but my health is fine, the scars are healing amazingly. I can’t believe how well the scars are healing. I’m sure I’ve had paper cuts that have taken longer to heal than the operation scars.

“I’m really good. Thank you for asking. Thank you to everybody that’s messaged, it’s been a bit overwhelming if I’m honest.”

Mark went on to say the human body is amazing before telling DJ Spoony he is glad he is “nearly back to full strength”.

Just after Christmas, DJ Spoony shared that doctors had identified a “small bleed” on his brain which led to him undergoing an operation over the issue. He spoke on his radio show and said: “So yes, the secret is out. I was off last week because on Saturday, the 21st of December, I got up early in the morning. I’d been having headaches for about three to four weeks and I’d been putting it off.

“It was hurting, then it wasn’t hurting, and I thought I’d go to the hospital. They did some tests and said they were going to give me a little scan and then it came back with the scan results and [the doctor] said ‘it looks like you have a small bleed to the brain and we need to send you over to Addenbrooke’s [Hospital]. The specialists there have seen it’.

“I was like ‘okay, no problem’ so sat down there in the waiting room and went and got myself a packet of crisps and a chocolate bar. I did have a bottle of water with me though, alright, cause I didn’t want to go all bad. Then he came back to me and he said ‘look Mr Joseph, we’re just waiting to hear from the bed admissions’ and I was like, ‘What do I need a bed for?’ He said ‘oh you’re gonna have to stay in. We need to operate’. At that point, I had no idea. So y’know a few … I’ve got to say this, the hardest part was being nil by month for 10, 12, 14 hours at times.

“But a few of those later, the amazing doctors and nurses at Addenbrooke’s had done the operation, had flushed me out. I was feeling fine 10 minutes after the operation, I was talking, looking forward to being back on the ward, eating a banana, and having a ginger shot, that’s all I could think about because I’d been nil by mouth for about 14 hours. Got back onto the ward and I was y’know just fine. So again, our amazing NHS, thank you to everyone at [the hospital] for looking after me. You were amazing.”
