With just a matter of weeks to go until Christmas, the UK’s ‘most festive’ cities have been revealed
The UK’s “most festive” towns and cities for 2024 have been named, with a Scottish city coming out on top. If you’re looking for cosy vibes and attractions to get you into the Christmas spirit, look no further than Inverness.
A study by GO Outdoors ranked destinations across the UK based on factors including the average number of snow days, the average duration of Christmas markets and the number of pubs. Inverness finished in first place thanks to its cosy pubs, including The Clachnaharry Inn, offering traditional food and drink and open fires, and high chance of snowfall around Christmas.
According to the study, Inverness sees an average of 27.1 snow days a year, making it perfect for a white Christmas experience. The city’s best winter attractions include the Brodie Illuminated light show and seasonal markets that offer local handmade gifts and holiday treats.
Christmas aside, Inverness is also a “beautiful” destination for a winter staycation. Nestled in the Scottish highlands, this vibrant spot offers the best of both worlds, whether you’re a lover of the natural world or you prefer the bustle of city life. Often seen as a gateway to the scenic North Coast 500 route or the Isle of Skye, Inverness is known for its rugged coastline and instagrammable scenery.
In the centre, you’ll find Inverness Castle, which sits on a hilltop overlooking the river and offers breathtaking views over the city. Another must-do while in the area is a visit to the iconic Loch Ness, a giant loch famed for being home to the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.
The food and drink scene is also a highlight, with Inverness previously named as one of the cheapest cities in the UK to buy a pint of beer.
Glasgow came in second place for those looking for a Christmas escape, thanks to its many festive attractions. Not only is the city famed for its Christmas Lights Switch On at George Square, but its Christmas markets are open for a whopping 58 days—more than any other city.
Plus, with 44 local walking trails and 58 cabins within 30 miles, visitors to the Scottish city can easily balance festive shopping with scenic outdoor escapes.
Rounding out the top three is another Scottish city, Edinburgh, thanks to its 64 nearby walking trails, including the Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags loop from Holyrood, and 50 days of Christmas markets.
Brighton and Hove, Nottingham and Manchester also featured in the list of the UK’s most festive cities, while Dundee and Cambridge also made it into the top 10.
