Carolina Canales, from Alagoas, in Brazil, was on a romantic trip in Bangkok, Thailand, and had been proposed to just days before her hotel room went up in flames

A beautiful young doctor has died in a hotel fire while on a holiday with her fiance in Bangkok.

The victim, named as Carolina Canales, from Alagoas, in Brazil, died during a fire at The Ember Hotel in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, on Sunday, December 29. Carolina was on holiday with her fiance, who has been named as medical student Fernando Ressurreicao, 26, with whom she had become engaged just six days earlier.

The fire reportedly started in the early hours of the morning, with Carolina believed to have inhaled a lot of smoke. Two other people died in the fire, according to Brazilian media. Carolina’s fiance survived. Carolina was the daughter of Dr Lara Daniela Canales and granddaughter of Dr Helenilda Canales, both from Palmeira dos Indios, in the interior of Alagoas.

The Alagoas Doctors’ Union (Sinmed-AL) issued a note of condolence lamenting the loss of the young medical professional. The doctors union said in a statement: “It is with deep regret that the Alagoas Doctors’ Union (Sinmed-AL) announces the death of Palmeiras doctor Carolina Canales, 24, this Sunday, December 29, victim of smoke inhalation during a fire at The Ember Hotel, located in Bangkok, Thailand. “She is the daughter of Palmeiras doctor Lara Daniela Canales and granddaughter of Dr Helenilda Canales.”

It is currently unclear what caused the fire. Witnesses said that the fire started on the fifth floor of the building, with around 40 people in the hotel at the time of the fire. Many of the hotel’s guests went to the roof and were rescued by firefighters. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

It comes just days after a British family lost “everything” when two houses on the same street went up in flames with residents woken by ‘loud bangs’ and the sight of large plumes of smoke billowing from the houses over the Christmas period.

The devastating fire has left one family with ‘nothing’ and three people were taken to hospital following the house fires, which occurred on York Street in Garston. At around 2.50am the emergency services were called to the scene, with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirming that everyone was accounted for.

However, they added that three people were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital as a precaution. In a bid to get the fires under control as quickly as possible, six fire engines were sent to the scene.

One 54-year-old resident said: “We were woken up to all the sirens and the smell of smoke and we [residents on York Street] all came out to see what was happening and to make sure they were out the house. One [of the houses] is empty but there is a family in the other one.
