Gardening experts are warning that there’s one key job that needs to be done now, otherwise you’ll be left regretting it when spring arrives

Gardening experts have issued an important warning to anyone who wants to ensure that come spring their garden isn’t in a mess.

Gardening experts at Thompson & Morgan explained how there’s one key thing that everyone who has a pond in their garden needs to do now, to save on stress come spring. The great thing about this game-changing hack is that it’s super quick and easy to do and isn’t expensive, either.

The experts explain that to protect your pond during the colder winter months, it’s vital that you ‘cover your pond with netting’ at least ‘until all the leaves have fallen’. This is important because if decomposing leaves end up falling into your pond, they could impact the water quality.

The gardening pros explained that: “Decomposing leaves turn your pond water foul and block filters on pumps.” This can impact the health of your pond life, from fish and frogs to plants and reeds – and pretty much anything else that lives in and around your pond.

They recommend adding pond netting now to ‘save time and effort later’ so that falling leaves can be caught before they hit your pond and contaminate the water. They suggest spreading a ‘fine mesh net’ across your pond and using bricks to pin it down securely.

As leaves fall onto the net, they add that it’s important to remove them and place them into your ‘leaf mould bin’ or onto the ‘compost heap’. It’s vital that leaves aren’t left to rot on the netting, as this will also lead to the water becoming contaminated.
