Brits seeking a slower pace of life away from the hustle and bustle of a city have been ushered towards an affordable seaside town.

With work-from-home arrangements becoming more accessible than ever, and house prices and rentals in the capital becoming increasingly unaffordable, many Brits are opting to leave the big city in search of a more manageable lifestyle. However, the dream of one day owning a home in the UK, let alone a beachfront house, seems to become increasingly distant every year.

But, this seaside town off the coast of Scotland has competitive house prices and a sense of community like no other, making it seem like the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle. Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute, is regarded as one of the UK’s most affordable coastal towns in which to buy a house.

According to Rightmove, the average house price in Rothesay is around £120,038. Overall, the historical sold prices in Rothesay over the last year were 10% higher than the previous year and 17% lower than the 2022 peak of £145,273.

Though it is remote, it is less than a two-hour drive to Glasgow, and of course, there is a bridge. The town was initially recognised for its once-thriving seaside resort, which Glaswegians loved. Rothesay is the main town on the Isle of Bute, which is easily accessible by ferry. The classic village boasts a range of attractions, including the Ardencraig Gardens and the Skeoch and Skipper Woods, which is a perfect adventure for nature lovers.

The town also has a range of indulgent restaurants, making it the perfect place to visit. Evening opening their first ever wine bar, called The Sulking Room, which has already become a favourite among residents.

Rothesay is also an excellent place for the whole family, with three schools in town providing exceptional primary and secondary education. The town is also incredibly safe, with a low crime rate of two out of ten, which is significantly lower than that of surrounding areas. The old town initially centred around Rothesay Castle, built in the 13th century. Although long in ruins, the castle retains its picturesque charm and continues to be a focal point for both tourists and locals.

Earlier this year, Rothesay Harbour completed all its repairs after a £1.9 million project. Now the harbour is built to accommodate much larger vessels, making travel to and from the island easier than ever before.
