Chelsea could sill see some exits from Stamford Bridge this month as the Blues look to offload members of their squad who are short of pitchtime and Borussia Dortmund could offer a solution

Unwanted Chelsea star Ben Chilwell may yet be offered a new way out of Stamford Bridge before the end of the transfer window.

The full-back, who found Champions League glory with the side in 2021, has been left on the periphery of proceedings since Enzo Maresca’s arrival at the club. Chilwell was left out of first-team training sessions as the west London side attempted to facilitate his transfer in the last window.

The 28-year-old still has a contract until 2027 after signing an extension with the club in 2023, but has not featured for the club this season outside of 45 minutes against Barrow in September. The only other squad Chilwell has made is when the Blues made their Carabao Cup exit to Newcastle.

Borussia Dortmund could offer club and player some salvation however. The German giants are said to be interested in making a move for Chilwell after failing in their attempt to land Renato Veiga, per reports.

Veiga, who Chelsea signed in the summer, is in search of more first team football and is set to join Juventus on loan before the end of the month. That has seen Chilwell become a potential option, although his £190,000-per-week salary could yet pose a problem.

Chelsea and Dortmund have found success in negotiating a deal for a full-back previously however. Only 12 months ago Ian Maatsen departed west London for the Westfalenstadion on loan.

Everton and Leicester have also been linked with a move for Chilwell this month. The Blues are said to be demanding £25million for a permanent transfer but could accept £20m.

Chelsea boss Maresca admitted earlier this month that he feels shame because of the position Chilwell has been left in. The Italian appeared adamant that chances would not be forthcoming however.

“Because players want to play more so there’s probably chances for them to leave,” Maresca said. “But Ben has been top. I have to say that, he has been top.

“Very professional, works hard. I feel shame because of that situation but in terms of behaviour, he has been very good.”

Maresca added: “First of all because it is my choice. And because I can see Malo Gusto, Reece James or Marc Cucurella doing different kind of jobs during the game.

“I think Chilwell is a top full-back, doing that job up and down and given opportunity in past to win titles and be in national team, but I struggle to see Ben doing different kind of things.”
