Previously named the most picturesque autumn village in Scotland by travel experts, Plockton is an idyllic coastal village overlooking Loch Carron in Wester Ross

As summer gives up the ghost and we move into the cosy months of autumn with crisp mornings, colourful leaves and warm hearty meals, a trip to the seaside might not be the first thing that comes to mind.

But for those in need of a beautiful British staycation this autumn, you could do a lot worse than the stunning village of Plockton. Previously named the most picturesque autumn village in Scotland by travel experts at real estate agents Fine & Country, Plockton is an idyllic coastal village overlooking Loch Carron in Wester Ross.

As the leaves on the trees turn golden and snow starts to dust the peaks of the surrounding mountains it is hard not to be swept up in the otherworldly charm of the remote village.

Plockton has long been regarded as the “jewel of the Highlands,” from its secluded bays and coral beaches to the various scenic walking and hiking trails in the area, it is the perfect place to switch off and unwind for a day or two, the Daily Record reports.

Maybe best known as the setting for the classic BBC television series Hamish Macbeth starring Robert Carlyle, Plockton boasts a well-stocked general goods store, an art studio, and even a distillery.

Visitors won’t want to miss a stop at The Shores – this beloved local restaurant was previously named the best seaside fish and chip spot in the country. The establishment’s fresh fish and top-quality service have earned rave reviews amongst visitors.

The village pub, the Plockton Inn, is a cosy little pub with rooms that is a great place for a pint after a day of sightseeing. The Inn regularly hosts live events with local musicians where you can soak in the lively atmosphere.

When first arriving in the village, you should walk along the bay that curves around it and take a seat on one of the benches that looks out over the water. After breathing in the tranquil views of Loch Carron for a while head into the village and sample the delights Plockton has on offer.

The village has its own train station and is easily accessible by rail from Inverness.
