Some people will be able to drift off to sleep a little easier with the small but helpful item

B&M shoppers who struggling to fall asleep may find some help from a cheap item. It’s backed by science and has some people “sleeping like a baby”.

The Soothing Sound Machine was spotted in the discount store with a £8 price tag by someone in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains Facebook group. To the untrained eye, it looks similar to an Alexa smart speaker, but it has one specific task – to make you feel relaxed and fall asleep.

It has six different options to help lull you off to sleep, including white noise and forest, rain, and ocean sounds. It also has ‘relax’ and ‘calm’ options, which play a mix of soothing sounds if none of the other options appeal to you.

The wireless device can run in the background for up to an hour, perfect for creating a serene bedtime routine before switching itself off automatically to save power. It has a rechargeable power pack – which means you won’t be endlessly running through batteries or draining your phone battery using that instead.

People were raving about the device in the comments section of the Facebook post. One said: “I could do with one of these then I can turn fan off!” Another added: “I’ll have to get one. I suffer from tinnitus really badly!”

A third person commented: “My sleep has suffered badly since the menopause but this really helps – and was cheap too!” Someone else wrote: “It’s brilliant. I got one of these for Christmas and have slept like a baby since!”

The same product sells for nearly £15 on Amazon. This makes B&M a cheaper alternative at almost half the price.

For millions of people, white noise can help them fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer by masking disruptive noise and creating a soothing, consistent background sound. White noise can assist certain individuals in falling asleep by covering up background sounds and lessening their reaction to unexpected noises. It may also relieve those with tinnitus by obscuring the ringing sensation in their ears.

According to a 2021 study exploring the effects of white noise on sleep and duration, researchers found it to be beneficial. The authors say: “Our data show that white noise significantly improved sleep based on subjective and objective measurements in subjects complaining of difficulty sleeping due to high levels of environmental noise. This suggests that the application of white noise may be an effective tool in helping to improve sleep in those settings.”
