Love them or hate them, Bounty bars are here to stay – but the divisive coconut flavour sparked anger in some customers over their Christmas Celebrations advent calendars

Chocolate lovers went coco-nuts as they opened their Celebrations advent calendar today – to find their third Bounty in a row.

The treat divides the opinion of the British masses and was once rated the nation’s most hated chocolate bar. The advent calendar from Mars, the company which owns Celebrations, released the festive calendar to customers and some were left disappointed to find a Bounty on their first two days.

Annoyed consumers called it a “sick joke” and joked it had “ruined Christmas” on social media. The advent calendar ire extended to Mumsnet and Reddit too and one thread on reddit was posted to the page ‘British Problems’ and one person said they had bounty on the first two days.

“The first two days of my celebrations advent calendar had bounties behind the doors,” they moaned. “I’m in the ‘they are a bit grim’ camp, and my old boss is benefitting every day as I take them into work for him… I think whoever has built the advent calendars is a bit of a sadist.”

One person on Mumsnet said the kids were “not impressed” by the first three days of their advent calendar. They wrote: “[Am I being unreasonable] to think that this is taking the p**s somewhat? Three in a row!”

“Does anyone else have a Celebrations advent calendar?” one asked on social media. “Highly disappointed that day one was a Bounty, day two was a Bounty, oh s*** day three three is a f***ing Bounty bar as well.”

Another said: “Never buying the Celebrations advent calendar ever again! I thought it was tragic enough getting Bounty on day one.. to then open door number two today to see another Bounty! I’ve had to dismantle the whole blasted thing to make sure I wasn’t part of some sick joke.”

Other customers, pleased with the Bounty haul, may have wondered why their fellow mini door openers were so upset, given the chocolate is readily advertised on any Celebrations box. One person said “Oh I love a Bounty” and another added “This would be my dream… they are my favourite!”

The calendar varies in price between £4 and £8 at supermarkets including Sainsbury’s, ASDA and Tesco.

In 2022, Mars announced it would remove Bounty bars from its Celebrations chocolate tubs in a pre-Christmas trial after finding 39 per cent of consumers want the coconut-flavoured treats banished for good. Customers at selected Tesco Christmas Market sites were be able to exchange tubs bought in store that day for a new “No Bounty” alternative until December 18.

Mars Wrigley said its own research of 2,000 Britons aged between 18 and 65 suggested that 18 per cent would feel irritated to find only Bounty bars were left in the tub, while 58 per cent believed it would lead to a family argument.

While 39 per cent wanted the bars gone for good, 22 per cent liked Bounty the least of all the tub’s options. Some 28 per cent were of the opinion that coconut had no place in a chocolate bar at all.
