Beloved pillar of the local community Kay Lane, aged in her 60s, died in a car crash more than a decade after her 21-year-old son Tim was killed in a two-vehicle collision in 2010
A woman who died in a collision just a few hundred yards from her home previously lost her son in a tragic crash.
Kay Lane, a widow and mum-of-four aged in her 60s, died on Wednesday after she was involved in a collision close to her Listowel home in County Kerry, Ireland. It was the second road collision death in the family after her son, Tim, died in a crash in nearby Newcastle West in 2010.
The crash on Wednesday happened on the R555 at Tanavalla outside Listowel at about 7:30pm. She was the sole person inside the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A postmortem examination is due to be conducted at University Hospital Kerry, and gardai (Irish police) have appealed to anyone who might have seen the crash to contact them.
She is survived by daughters Helen and Joan. Ms Lane was admired by local residents for running the family farm following the deaths of her husband and sons.
Tim was 21 when he died and was a trainee accountant who was working with Kerry Group. Her husband Pat died in October 2013 at their home in Coolnaleen, just outside Listowel.
Her youngest son, Patrick, died aged 19 tragically in March 2009 while he was studying hotel management, CorkBeo reported.
Former minister Jimmy Deenihan, who is from Ms Lane’s local area of Finuge, said the local community was shocked by the tragedy. He said: “She was a very popular lady. She was universally loved, and it is no exaggeration to say that people are numbed by what has happened.”
He continued that Ms Lane had “taken on past tragedy very bravely” following the deaths of her two sons and husband. Liam Nolan, another local councillor, said: “My heart and my sympathy goes out to her family and all of her close friends, of whom there are many.”
He described Ms Lane as “an absolutely fantastic lady” who had experienced a lot of misfortune during her life.
